It should have been technically possible for someone to build one after all, there were such adapters for Firewire 800 and Gigabit Ethernet. I don't remember any standalone Thunderbolt 3 to USB 3 adapters. There are some converters I’ve found on line that look like hubs (big and boxy) selling for more than US$85. Hope everything works out.įor the life of me I cannot find such an animal. You can shove just about any hard disc you have in there. This BlacX thing is very versatile in that it will accept 2 1/2" drives and 3 1/4" drives and it looks kind of like a toaster when slice of bread isn't shoved in yet. The "BlacX" is externally powered and works fine. I have a "BlacX" disc holder that accepts a USB older style cable and an ESATA cable so I used the ESATA port. The way I have mine hooked up one thunderbolt port on my iMac attached to the thunderbolt cable on the adapter. I know that when you start jerry rigging adapters things don't always work out. You may need external power on the external disc. The problem you may encounter is the port may not supply enough power to power up the little converter box AND your disc drive. Apple sells it even though they don't make it. I think I paid whatever they charged me at the Apple Store which was probably about $76. A Thunderbolt 1 or 2 to USB-c adaptor cable is only $15 on Amazon. Did you pay $76 for it or did you buy it a long time ago when it was cheaper? Can't understand why these are so expensive. I use this on my 2015 iMac with thunderbolt 2 ports. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.

I can find thunderbolt to USB-C converters for less than half that much. I can’t imagine they were shelling out that type of money for what looks like a pretty straightforward conversion. Do I really need to spend that much? If I remember correctly when the thunderbolt equipped iMac first came out people complained that they would need to purchase adapters for their USB peripherals. So I need to find a Thunderbolt (generation 1 or 2) to USB adapter.įor the life of me I cannot find such an animal.

I would like to be able to plug some peripherals (mainly portable external HDDs) into the Thunderbolt. I own an older (2011) 21inch iMac with a Thunderbolt 1 port on the back (it also has a few USBs and a FireWire 800 ports).
